Tactica: Flagellants

Many thanks to Lord Calsius for this article.

Flagellants are in my opinion are one of the most reliable troops in the game. With a solid two S5 attacks in the first round of combat, completely unbreakable and immune to all psychology, they are an unpleasant unit to face in combat, and for this reason a number of methods can be used to get the best out of them.

1: The Deterrent
No one would like to charge a unit into a fully ranked unit of flagellants. The fact that in order to win they would have to wipe out completely a unit of T4 troops is quite daunting. For this reason, you put your flagellants exactly where you don’t want your enemies to go. This will force you opponent into going where he does not want to go, but, if you have planned well, exactly where you want him to go, for example, within charge range of a unit of knights, or within range of a hellblaster volley gun. Its up to you, but by bottle-nacking them you can nullify the effects of numbers if you are outnumbered.

2: The Block
To bog down the enemy advance, simply throw your block into a big, powerful block of enemy soldiers. It will take them a long time to get rid of you if you don’t get rid of them first and so will ruin the battle plan of the enemy.

A useful thing you can do with flagellants is to put them in combat with the enemy’s unbreakable units. This will mean that your less reliable troops don’t suffer from the same tactics used as above. However, make sure that if you do this to make sure you flagellants can cause some significant damage so that if they are wiped out then your other troops will not struggle to finish them off.

The Flagellants can use their ability to hold the enemy in place to your great advantage in other ways. Use the flagellants to hold down the biggest units, and flank them with anotherheavy unit, e.g. a small unit of greatswords, knights or halberdiers. That will allow you to cause some big casualities to an enemy unit.

Flagellants are perfect troops to bring down dwarf slayers in combat. Being unbreakable they can hold them for most of the game, and by having a large movement value will be able to charge them, meaning that they can get their flails well into place to cause some damage first. This will allow you to flank/rear charge the slayers with knights and other heavier units that have the skill and strength to actually take them down later.

Lastly, do not expect flagellants to survive and don't worry if they die! They only join your cause to fight to the death, and its fluffy if they get wiped out in the end. Charge them into the heaviest enemy units, do things with them they would actually do. This may or may not work to your advantage but do it anyway for fun.
